This part of the city is undergoing a preservation process for its historical value, having several buildings that represent a variety of social and economic conditions experienced along generations. This was the quarter of the first immigrants and the centre of the main economic development in the ancient city.
A very conspicuous feature of the area is the elevation of pavements, some of whom are up to 1.5 metre (5 feet) above the street level.
Many houses and shops are among the oldest buildings in the province, and still they are all used to host passengers or for commercial purposes.
