The corner of 12 de Abril and Juan José Paso, is the location of the cultural centre La Casona, and the Municpal Pottery School, in a nineteenth century building where Colón’s cultural activity is developed. Typical local handmade articles are exposed and sold in the ground floor.
The Banco de la Nación Argentina stayed there until 1914. Then the Customs service moved its offices to this house until 1977, and two years later the present function was installed.
Masonry works date back to 1868, and shortly after that, on February 6, 1870, as Domingo Faustino Sarmiento was the Argentine president, he visited Colón and General Urquiza stayed in these rooms.
As usual on its time's architecture, facades were little decorated. The main access goes through a hall on 12 de Abril Street, connected to the patio and a room to each side. That open space is the stage of folklore meetings and to taste regional gastronomy specialties. On your right hand you will find a staircase leading to the first floor, whose extension comprehends only the wing facing 12 de Abril Street.
By the house, on the pavement of Juan José Paso Street, there is a kiosk formerly located on the square corner, that is now a bit of the historic patrimony of the city.
